This 1920s Bucharest basement has undergone an extensive transformation, emerging as a testament to the harmonious blend of historical preservation and contemporary design. Envisioned as a versatile rental space with limitless potential, it adapts effortlessly to the needs and aspirations of its future occupants. What was once a neglected space plagued by water damage and unsuitable interventions is now a thoughtfully revitalized environment, ready to embrace a new chapter in its history.

The project began with addressing the significant challenges posed by the basement's condition. Water infiltration had taken a toll on the brickwork and flooring, while previous renovations had used inappropriate materials, necessitating a complete overhaul. Meticulous restoration efforts focused on preserving the building's inherent character, with exposed brick walls and ceilings carefully cleaned, repaired, and sealed to prevent further deterioration. These beautifully imperfect surfaces, bearing the marks of time, now stand as a testament to the building's rich past.

To further enhance the space, specialized restoration plasters and lime-based products were applied, ensuring both authenticity and longevity. The warm, neutral color palette chosen for the walls, ceilings, and flooring creates a welcoming and inviting atmosphere, while the microcement floor acts as a blank canvas, ready to complement any future tenant's vision.

Conceptual sketch of the architectural design of a historic basement

The concept of "skins" defines the transformative journey of this 1920s basement, where contrasting layers narrate the passage of time and the building's evolution.

The exposed brick walls, bearing the patina of age, form the first layer, a testament to the building's history. A second skin emerges in the smooth, white-painted surfaces, signifying a contemporary intervention that respects the past while embracing a modern aesthetic. In the bathroom, a third skin appears, where rounded corners and a light palette create a contrasting, almost futuristic, environment within the historical shell.

This layering of "skins" creates a dynamic tension, inviting a dialogue between the old and the new and showcasing the multi-faceted nature of the space.

One of the main focuses of the renovation is the approach to lighting.

Recognizing the limitations of natural light in a basement setting, a multi-layered illumination scheme was devised.

Track lighting provides versatility, allowing for adjustable spotlights to highlight specific areas or create dramatic effects, while perimeter LED strips offer a soft, diffused glow.

Entering the old building and descending the cool, textured spiral staircase, one leaves the bustling city behind and enters a tranquil oasis. Exposed brick, bathed in warm light, guides the eye through the space, where historical details and modern interventions create a harmonious balance.

Its open layout, adaptable lighting, and warm atmosphere make it ideal as both a living space and a commercial venue. Whether serving for rent, an inspiring office space, or a captivating exhibition gallery, the space adapts effortlessly.

In the bathroom, the lack of a window was addressed by transforming a necessary system access panel into an illuminated "window" of frosted glass, bringing a touch of daylight into the space.

A new "skin" of smooth, rounded surfaces and light colors contrasts with the dark, textured walls and ceiling, creating a dynamic interplay between old and new. This space exemplifies the project's overarching theme of harmonizing historical elements with contemporary interventions.

Soft, diffused light highlights the delicate textures of the plants and the aged brick, creating a serene contrast between nature and history.

The design embraces the beauty of imperfection, showcasing the craftsmanship of the original builders and the artisans involved in the restoration.

The color palette creates a dialogue between old and new. Earthy hues honor the building's history, while a vibrant accent color injects contemporary flair.

The subtle undulations and variations in the plastered walls, echo the natural textures of the exposed brickwork. This deliberate choice to celebrate the handmade quality of the space adds a layer of warmth and authenticity.

The restored brick vaults, now painted a warm white, speak to the project's commitment to preserving history while embracing a contemporary aesthetic.

Custom-designed elements further elevate the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the basement.

Concealed within the wall-ceiling junctions, sleek moldings not only hide unsightly pipes but also house a system of metal bars for hanging artwork or shelves without damaging the historic brickwork. These moldings also incorporate wall-washing illumination, subtly highlighting the textures of the walls and creating a sense of depth.

The introduction of large-scale greenery breathes life into the basement, softening the industrial feel and creating a refreshing contrast with the exposed brick and metalwork.

Oversized plants become sculptural elements, adding a touch of nature's artistry to the space and enhancing the sense of tranquility.
